Cuphead will be released on Steam, but PS4 version ruled out

We now have a clearer picture of exactly how gamers will be able to get their hands on the hotly anticipated Cuphead.

Speaking on Neogaf, a member of the game’s development team confirmed that the title will not by a Windows Store exclusive. Nor, however, will it be headed to PS4.

Yes, this Cuphead game is exclusive to Xbox and PC (with Steam and Win10 versions at launch and a GoG release likely shortly after),” StudioMDHR confirmed. There will likely be a Mac version down the road and possibly a Linux version beyond that (unless we lose our houses or whatever).”

The studio added that it owns the Cuphead IP.

The game was first revealed back in 2014 and was playable as far back as 2015. It was only at E3 this month that it finally got a release date, however – September 29th.

Speaking to GamesRadar, co-creator Chad Moldenhauer has confessed that the road to market has been a tough one.

We realized that there were a lot of people out there that wanted what we were doing,” he said. My brother and I quit our jobs, remortgaged our houses and began expanding the team. This was our chance to actually deliver the game we wanted to make all along, rather than the cut-scope game we originally planned with a three person team.”

Much of the struggle came from responding to criticism of early builds, where many weren’t keen on the lack of platforming levels and focus on boss fights.

The reality is, Cuphead is closer now to the game we always wanted,” Moldenhauer added. We aren’t throwing levels in to mollify people, we’re putting them back in after originally cutting them from our ‘dream scope’. When we recognized that Cuphead was something that a lot of people seemed to want, we decided to go all out and make the game we always wanted to.”

The truth is that we started Cuphead as a three person team, just working on the weekend. With such a small team we knew to keep our scope small; there were just a few bosses and a couple of weapons and everything was just less insane.”

There are currently 20 developers working on the game.
