Dark Souls II PC owners will have to buy again to get all of Scholar of the First Sin upgrades

More details about Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin make poor reading for PC owners.

Revealed earlier, the new SKU offers an upgraded version of the existing game complete not only with all of its DLC but also with some visual, technical and gameplay tweaks.

However, while the existing PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game will receive a number of upgrades via the upcoming v1.10 patch, the headline additions will only be available in the PS4, Xbox One and new PC DirectX-11 version.

And NeoGaf reports that the Japanese press release confirms that the current PC game, which is built on, DirectX-9 will not receive these free upgrades.

Specifically, the v1.10 patch for the current game will introduce new characters, events, story elements and ‘world additions’, as well as some balancing tweaks.

The next-gen and DirectX-11 release gets all of this and adds in graphics and performance upgrades, an increase to the maximum number of simultaneous online players (supporting 3v3) as well as unspecified ‘enemy and game design adjustments’.

The game’s three DLC releases will only be available in the new SKU and not offered as a free part of the upgrade.

Save data will carry over to upgraded versions of the game but will not be transferrable to the PS4, Xbox One and PC DirectX-11 releases. Servers for the next-gen and existing games will also be separate.

The possibility remains, of course, that PC owners may be offered a discount upgrade, as has been seen with titles such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin will be released on April 3rd 2015.
