Dead Cells tops 2 million sales

Dead Cells has sold more than two million copies.

“We’re celebrating the release of Rise of the Giant, our first FREE DLC, with a small announcement…,” Motion Twin teased on its official Twitter account yesterday. “We just passed the TWO MILLION COPIES sold! Thanks so much for the continual support you’re showing us, day after day.”

The milestone comes just two months after it hit the one million landmark in March 2019.

Rise of the Giant is available as a free DLC on Switch, PlayStation 4 and is out now across the US, Europe and Japan. Unfortunately, “a last minute bug in the Certification process” has delayed the roll-out on Xbox One, but it is expected “to come a bit later”.

“It started something like three or four years ago,” lead developer and game designer Sébastien Bénard told MCV last year, reflecting on how Dead Cells came to fruition. “At this time, Motion Twin was still making mostly web games and a few mobile titles but we wanted to make some kind of spiritual sequel to an older game that we made called Hordes [also known as Die2Nite]. It started as a free-to-play kind of game, a tower defense, something different. It reached the prototype phase so we did have an alpha version that we showed to people and it didn’t go well, because it really wasn’t fun, like really not.”

“Because we are an old company, we did have lots of different titles before and we know for sure that sticking to one game, one success, is not a good idea. So when you make a good game, the best thing to do is just to make another one.”

While two million sales is a significant milestone, Dead Cells still has some way to go before it rivals the biggest selling video game of all time, Minecraft, which Microsoft recently confirmed has now sold 176 million copies. As sale estimates of its nearest rival, Tetris, vary wildly from 170 million to 425 million, no-one’s entirely sure if Mojang has pushed its blocky-sibling from the top spot, but the news does, however, confirm that Minecraft has sold an additional 20 million copies in just seven months, and puts it significantly higher than third place Grand Theft Auto V, which has shifted around 110 million copies to date.

World War Z, the new zombie shooter developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Interactive, has also recently hit the two million milestone, clocking up two million sales in its debut month on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

We also discovered this week that Sony Santa Monica’s critically-acclaimed God of War has exceeded 10 million sales.
