Hopes for a third instalment in the atmospheric shooter series Metro in the near future have been dashed by publisher Deep Silver.
The website for upcoming novel Metro 2035 had until recently contained a timeline that pointed to a new title in the works for 2017, adding: It all adds up to something. Where the books end their story, the game will pick it up. An era of great discoveries lies ahead…The next Metro video game.”
However, that has now been amended to read: An untitled Metro project: But the Metro saga doesn’t end where the books leave us… An era of great discoveries lies ahead!”
Furthermore, publisher Deep Silver has via its Facebook page issued the following clarification: You may have noticed some sites have reported that a new Metro game would be released in 2017.
As the exclusive rights holder to videogames set in the Metro 2033 universe, Deep Silver has ambitious plans for the hugely successful Metro series. But just to manage our fans’ expectations – releasing the next Metro game in 2017 is not one of them.

Metro 2033, which is based on the novel of the same name, was released in 2010. It quickly gained cult status thanks to its gritty tone and emphasis on survival, while staying true to more traditional shooter design – and for the fact that a then little-known Ukrainian studio 4A Games produced a triple-A quality game with a small team and very little resource.
A sequel, Metro: Last Light, arrived in 2013. This time it was not based on the series’ second book, Metro 2034, and was instead a direct sequel to its predecessor. Whether a third game in the series would do the same or would instead turn to upcoming novel release 2035 remains to be seen.
Both games were released in remastered form in 2014.
