Diablo III crosses 10m units sold, expansion in the works

A shaky launch and less than stellar critical reception hasn’t stopped Diablo III from selling like any other Blizzard effort.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick revealed that the latest in the action RPG franchise had sold over 10m copies thus far between digital and retail.

"Year-to-date, Diablo 3 is the top-selling game overall based on enough meta, digital and retail sales in North America and Europe,” Kotick stated during Activision’s earnings call. Diablo 3 has sold already in excess of 10 million copies.”

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime also spoke during the call, mentioning that an expansion is planned for the game, but a schedule hasn’t been laid down for it as of yet.

"We do have an expansion planned for Diablo, I don’t have any timeline to talk about,” Morhaime said. I think the most important thing for us always comes down to the quality of the expansion and the gameplay, so that will be a big factor in terms of driving our schedule."
