Epic opens up in-game purchases on Epic Games Store for developers and publishers

Epic will now allow developers and publishers on Epic Games Store to “implement their choice of payment and purchase functionality for in-game purchases.” Previously such transactions had to be made using “Epic-provided payment services.”

Epic also noted that “developers who use their choice of purchase and payment services in-game do not have to share any revenue on those transactions.”

The company just announced the policy change publically, having communicated it to store partners earlier this week. Epic-provided payment options will still be available for those who wish to continue using them.

“We support developers’ right to choose among the best stores, in-app payment processors, online services, and engines, and to mix and match these components as they wish,” said Epic Games co-founder and CEO Tim Sweeney. “In addition to the generous 88/12 revenue share, we’re excited to offer developers and publishers more options that allow them to keep more of what they earn, so that they can continue to invest in making bigger, better games.”
