Square Enix has revealed its Final Fantasy series has surpassed 100 million units worldwide.

The Japanese publisher’s flagship series is known for its imaginative worlds and rich stories.
The original Final Fantasy was released in 1987 for the NES. Since then the franchise has seen many spin-offs, two feature length CG films and all kinds of merchandise.
However, the franchise has had its share of difficulties in recent times.
Way back in 2006, Square announced a trio of games set in the Final Fantasy XIII universe. Two of those titles are still to see the light of day: Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0.
Square hinted last year that PS3-exclusive Versus XIII may also arrive on 360. Meanwhile, Type-0 – originally known as Agito XIII – has gone from mobile to PSP and will reportedly come on two UMDs.
Furthermore, troubled development on the online-only Final Fantasy XIV prompted the publisher to restructure the title’s development team and postpone its planned PS3 release. The PC version of FFXIV is currently free-to-play.
The series’ latest title, Final Fantasy XIII-2, is set to arrive later this year in Japan.
