NPD: Grand Theft Auto V leads industry to positive month in September

NPD’s monthly retail report reveals that Grand Theft Auto V sales have carried the industry to a 27 per cent year-over-year increase in total revenue.

This year’s period saw $1.07bn earned, versus the $848m brought in during September 2012.

Physical Software sales – where GTA V’s impact was located – were up 52 per cent to $754.3m, compared to $497.5m last year.

Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2K14 pitched in as well, but Rockstar’s latest stands a distant first on the top ten software titles chart.

GTA V also assisted Sony, as PS3 overtook Xbox 360 in hardware – ending Microsoft’s consecutive streak on top of the segment.

PS3 came out on top largely thanks to the system’s Grand Theft Auto V bundle, according to NPD Group’s Liam Callahan.

Still, the hardware segment finished down 13 per cent from 2012, bringing in $183.2m for the month. Accessories saw a two per cent increase from 2012, bringing in $142.3m.
