FIFA 13 was "commercially disappointing" on Wii U

FIFA 14 will not release on Wii U. Unsurprisingly. What’s more notable is EA’s honesty when asked exactly why that is.

"Six months ago FIFA 13 was a launch title on Wii U," an EA spokesperson told Eurogamer.

"Although the game featured FIFA’s award-winning HD gameplay and innovative new ways to play, the commercial results were disappointing. We have decided not to develop FIFA 14 on Wii U."

The FIFA series is one of the most successful on the UK High Street and is rivalled only by the big triple-A FPS titles.

Obviously Nintendo’s recent home machines have targeted a wholly different market, but the near-universal appeal of football makes it somewhat surprising that the series hasn’t performed on Nintendo’s machines.

What effect – if any – the lack of a FIFA or Call of Duty release on the Wii U release schedule this Christmas will have remains to be seen.
