Free to play titles take charge of Apples App Store

The growing momentum of free to play games is not just taking over the MMO market – it’s also taken control of Apple’s App Store marketplace.

TouchArcade has word from the latest Flurry report which shows that free-to-play games now account for 65 per cent of the total revenues from the App Store’s Top 100 titles. Earlier this year that figure stood at just 39 per cent.

When Steve Jobs initially announced the introduction of in-app purchases earlier this year the exec had intended the system to be restricted to premium games.

However, following an uproar from the dev community this decision was overturned, opening the floodgates to a new era of freemium iOS titles.
