Game Awards will encourage developer transparency thanks to No Man’s Sky

Video host Geoff Keighley has said the controversy surrounding No Man’s Sky has forced a change in how next month’s Game Awards Show will operate.

Hello Games’ space title has caused a quite extraordinary amount of controversy online thanks to the disparity between its pre-release marketing and show reels and the final product that shipped this year.

No Man’s Sky was announced in Keighley’s final SpikeTV VGX Awards in 2013, and its first video featured at the debut Game Awards.

"I have thought about the story of No Man’s Sky a lot," Keighley told Polygon. "Did we create this black hole of hype that the developers couldn’t pull themselves out of? Some of that was authored by me.

"That game, when it was announced, everyone in their mind’s eye came up with an idealized notion of what it was going to be. I knew the team and it was eight guys. The vision was never going to be achieved.

"The nature of showing anything in advance is challenging and it’s a game of expectations," he said. "When Warner Bros. showed the first Suicide Squad everyone went crazy and the movie ended up being kind of not that great.

"There is a good moral of that story and it’s part of what I’m trying to address this year; to have developers be more transparent about the state of their game."
