Game over for Totalvideogames.com

Consumer games site Totalvideogames.com has officially ceased operation.

The site’s staff writer Gwynne Dixon was last year nominated for best online specialist writer at the Games Media Awards 2011.

It’s with much regret and a heavy heart that we’re announcing the closure of Totalvideogames.com (TVG),” an internal email to staff reads.

After a particularly difficult year in 2011 where Google left us high and dry and our competitors grew ever fiercer, we felt it was the right time to hang up the site’s boots as the world we once knew of internet games journalism makes way for a new generation of young hopefuls at leveraged networks of sites and blogs.

We leave behind us 14 years of TVG coverage in one form or another, and a keep safe of happy memories from the many, many good people we’ve met and shared such enjoyable times with along the way.

It goes without saying that we sincerely appreciate all of the support, hospitality and, indeed, free games that publishers and PR teams have been kind enough to provide us through the years – in the most literal sense, we couldn’t have done it without you.

We came into this industry as avid video-game fans and we leave it with that love intact – TVG will go on as a website and brand, providing ongoing coverage and publicity for the development of a smartphone game from our editor, Chris Leyton.

We’re hoping to be able to retain TVG’s archive of articles nonetheless, so that our imprint on the likes of Metacritic can be retained and our reader-base can continue to use the site as a resource at the very least – an official closure message will be posted on the homepage in the coming week.”
