Mobile data firm App Annie reports that games were responsible for more than 80 per cent of consumer spending on the App Store and Google Play outlets.
This news comes as part of the company’s Gaming Spotlight 2015 Review.
The firm also reports that the number of downloads on both the App Store and Google Play declined between 2014 and 2015. App Annie says that between them, the share of game downloads from App Store and Google Play fell from 40 per cent to 38 per cent.
Meanwhile, Google Play saw a larger share of consumers spending their hard-earned cash on games. However, consumers spent more money on games on iOS.
App Annie notes that mobile game spending overtook that of home console and PC in 2014, and that gap is widening.
Regionally, the Asia Pacific territory saw the largest share of mobile spend, and that share grew by 3.4 per cent between 2014 and 2015.
This is something App Annie attributes to the launch of iOS in China. The rise of mobile gaming in Japan, as well as a strong mobile market in the likes of South Korea won’t be harming this figure, either.
While America and Western Europe were made up a relatively small percentage of total mobile gaming spend, when it comes to home game consoles, the US and Europe made up a sizeable portion. App Annie reports that home console consumer spend increased by 2.5 per cent year-on-year.
Clash of Clans was the world’s highest-grossing App Store game, ahead of Mixi’s Monster Strike, and Machine Zone’s Game of War.
Over in the Google Play Top Five, it’s Monster Strike that took the top spot, beating Supercell’s Clash of Clans.
