Games Media Awards 2015 Finalists: Games Critic

As we count down to the awards event on Wednesday October 14th, MCV profiles the finalists for this year’s Games Media Awards.

Here we look at the games critic category.

Alex Dale

Games criticism has changed in the (counts on fingers, lets out a gulp) ten years since I started the job. But there’s something timeless about a good review – one that gets under the fingernails of a game and finds out what makes it tick – that I enjoy now as much as ever, both as a writer and a reader.

Chris Schilling

Three-time GMA loser Chris Schilling has been submitting competent copy about games for ten years, yet his unease at having to write about himself in the third-person remains undiminished by the passage of time. These days, he contributes a number of words to Edge, and slightly fewer words to the likes of IGN, VICE, OXM, OPM, GamesMaster and the Telegraph. Some of them were evidently pretty good, otherwise he wouldn’t have had to write this.

Chris Thursten

I got my start writing about games by accidentally breaking an Xbox demo unit in front of the editor of Official Xbox Magazine at the Eurogamer Expo in 2010. I’ve worked for PC Gamer since 2011 as a staff writer, video editor, deputy editor, acting editor, and now as the launch editor of our competitive gaming channel, PC Gamer Pro. I’ve also written for Edge, GamesRadar, OXM, and GamesMaster.

Ian Dransfield

Ian once reviewed a game and gave it 9%, thus making him the most ethical journalist of all time ever. He has a fondness for scotch eggs, and will punch Steve Burns in the face should the poser win anything

Matt Lees

London-based gaming journalist who specialises in writing, video, and audio stuff.

Nathan Ditum

Nathan is a film and video game journalist with over ten years experience writing for the likes of Eurogamer, Edge and The Telegraph. This year a lot of his writing has been about fantasy worlds and nostalgia, which is the politest and most productive way to have a mid-life crisis he could come up with.

Steve Burns

Hello. They wouldn’t let me simply state ‘Kill All Games Journalists’ here, so I suppose I’ll just say nothing at all. See ya.

Steve Hogarty

Do you know that test they used to do on witches where they dunk them in the water? I want you to do that to me. Not to test if I am a witch, but to drown me. I want to drown. I’ve been writing about videogames for ten years and I want to be dead at the bottom of a lake. Please do it soon.
