GMA 2011 FINALISTS: Games Broadcast/Podcast

There are just two weeks to go until the biggest night of the year for the UK’s games media. In the run-up to the big event on Wednesday October 26th at Vinopolis, we’re providing a series of features profiling those media brands and individuals in the running for an award.

GameSpot UK Podcast

The GameSpot UK Podcast is GameSpot UK’s flagship weekly audio show, and is one of the UK’s longest running dedicated videogame podcasts, running since 2006. Since winning the inaugural GMA Podcast award in 2007, the show has continued to go from strength to strength, with guests such as writer Rhianna Pratchett, developer Charles Cecil, and composer Richard Jacques joining the regular crew of Mark Walton, Guy Cocker and Jane Douglas.

Gamewank

Richie Morgan and Jamie Trinca started Gamewank in 2009 after purchasing a load of equipment to record a radio sitcom they never got around to. They decided to concentrate on video game podcasting. We could just talk a load of wank”, said Jim. Gamewank was born. The show quickly grew into a hybrid of commentary and sketches, with a presenting style noted for hilarious tangents and often lavishly produced comedy storylines.

Gamesweasel

Matt Cuttle has been reviewing video games on his Gamesweasel podcast for over four years now. Matt has also been making video game TV and online content for 13 years, making popular shows for ITV1, Sky One, Rapture TV, Jetix and Disney XD and currently also produces and presents EA PWNED on Electronic Arts’ UK website and Ginx News on Ginx TV. The fortnightly Gamesweasel podcast and website concentrate on giving facts to gamers in a short, entertaining format that pulls no punches. It covers all popular formats and is being nominated for the third time in the best broadcast/podcast category.

One Life Left

One Life Left is still Europes only full-length video game radio show, broadcast live across London on Resonance 104.4FM and podcast for posterity at www.onelifeleft.com. The show is presented by industry veterans Ste Curran and Simon Byron alongside MCV pin-up girl Ann Scantlebury and hosts star guests from inside and outside the games industry. Fiercely independent, always inclusive and largely ridiculous, the last year saw OLL branch out into stand-up comedy and create a video game ‘book club’, No Continues.

Saturday Edition 5live

The Saturday Edition sees Chris Warburton present the day’s news including the latest technology and video games news with a member of the GameSpot UK editorial team.

SentUAmessage

SentUAMessage is a video mailbag show that aims to entertain and enlighten the Xbox LIVE community through a mixture of willful Gamertag mispronunciation, life-threatening physical comedy and a selection of funny hats. Written and hosted by Andy Farrant and Dan Maher, and grudgingly bashed into watchability by video producers Ash Denton and Gareth Wild, SentUAMessage has developed a loyal following around the world.

Start/Select

Start/Select is GameSpot UK’s daily video show, presented from the site’s London office. It covers off news and events relevant to the UK audience and leverages the site, Twitter and Facebook to gauge user sentiments and feedback. The show is made available on the site, on iTunes, on Facebook and on Youtube, allowing the growing audience to find and interact with the show however they choose.

The Games Media Awards 2011, in association with Grainger Games, take place on Wednesday October 26th at the super chic Vinopolis venue near Borough Market. Greg Davies, top stand-up and star of The Inbetweeners, will be the host for the evening.

Grainger Games has signed up as headline sponsor of the event, with other sponsors already signed up including Microsoft, Codemasters, EA, Sony, Ubisoft, Nintendo, OnLive, Namco Bandai, Trion Worlds, Gamescom, Nordic Games, Konami, Sega, NC Soft, Rising Star Games, Green Man Gaming, Games Tribe, 2K Games and Venatus Media.
