Grow Up Australia wins widespread support

The deadline for submissions in the ongoing debate around mature and violent video games in Australia is this Sunday – and campaign group Grow Up Australia says it already has 16,055 submissions to present to the government.

Of those, the body says that nearly all are in favour of the introduction of a new R18+ that would for the first time allow the sale of mature-themed games in the traditionally conservative country.

With less than a week until the deadline for submissions, there is still opportunity for people who want to get involved to make a submission,” Grow Up Australia co-founder Jake Edwards stated.

Retail in particular has been vocal in its support for the campaign, with EB Games embarking on an in-store initiative to raise awareness amongst consumers.

Things took a dark turn, however, when South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson – a vocal critic of violent games – claimed to have received death threats from aggrieved gamers angered by his stance.
