The Japanese release of The Evil Within will have an uncensored edition – but only if gamers pre-order.
The upcoming horror game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has been cut down to fit with the Japanese CERO D age rating – the equivalent of ages 17 and up – but can be restored to a hard CERO Z (18-plus) by downloading the ‘Gore Mode’ DLC.
If we were to make it the same way as the foreign version, it’d be rated CERO Z and we felt that it’d be best to release it the way the creators make it,” Tetsu Takahashi, GM for publisher ZeniMax Asia, told Famitsu.
However, that would limit the sales and advertising, so we’d lose the opportunity to reach out to as many customers as possible.
The Evil Within will have two types of CERO D and CERO Z, with both of them having passed the CERO inspections, but only the retail version will be done using the CERO D version,” he added.
Those who preorder the game can get the CERO Z version’s representation through the Gore Mode DLC.”
Takahashi didn’t go on to say whether the DLC would eventually be made available for those who don’t pre-order, but did add that the recent delay to The Evil Within’s release date was made in order to polish up the game.
