MCV Awards 2016 Finalist Profiles: Buying Team

As we countdown to the MCV Awards 2016, which takes place in London on March 3rd, we profile each of the finalists for the Buying Team category

Online retailer Amazon continues to be a behemoth in the retail space. Latest data from research firm Kantar Worldpanel revealed that Amazon’s share of the entertainment market remains at an enviable 20.7 per cent.

The buying team at Tesco has been trying to ensure that every major launch is more an event than simply a release. Events were held for the likes of Star Wars Battlefront and Batman: Arkham Knight, and 2015 saw the grocery giant launch an innovative E3 promotion.

The Hut Group

Zavvi’s parent company The Hut Group restructured its games and tech team last year, with key new recruits. Former senior buyer Mike Fethers now leads the new team as head of technology and games.

Argos considers itself somewhat of an underdog among industry buyers, but has made an impact with a dedicated team working on key its relationships.

GAME’s buying increased to more than 40 in 2015 and has grown its digital product range to more than 7,000 products, including digital currency, downloadable ‘add-on’ content and full game downloads across console, VR, freemium/social and mobile games.

Sainsbury’s has a growing games business that has gone from one per cent to just under five per cent of the market in six years (Chart Track), with a team of three buyers who have been working together for five years.
