New version of video platform could launch this year, revenue shared with video creators

Google plans ad-free YouTube subscription

A new subscription offer could allow YouTube users to watch videos without being interrupted by any advertisements.

The new plans from Google, which owns the video platform, were revealed by Bloomberg and could be introduced “as soon as this year”.

Revenues generated from this subscription service will put Google in direct competition with services such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, and the firm is reportedly planning to share some of this money with video creators.

According to Bloomberg’s source, all videos on YouTube will be available ad-free to subscribers for a monthly fee, although the price has yet to be set. Subscribers may also be given offline access to videos.

Google is apparently talking to content creators because it hopes to set new terms that would allow their clips to be included in the subscription version.

In a not-quite-a-denial statement, Google said: “While we can’t comment on ongoing discussions, giving fans more choice to enjoy the content they love and creators more opportunity to earn revenue are always amongst our top priorities.”

YouTube revenues are a particularly hot topic in the games industry, with publishers and developers divided over whether video creators should be able to profit from footage taken from their games – something some firms argue infringes on copyright.

Most notably, Nintendo has launched a new scheme to share ad revenues with YouTubers provided footage is only captured from a select list of games. This has been met with backlash from several prominent YouTubers, including PewDiePie and Angry Joe.
