Sonic movie gets 2019 release date

2019 could well be year of the Sonic, as Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog film is planned for release in November next year.

This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who suggest that everyone’s favourite speedy erinaceidae will be coming to the big screen on November 15, 2019. The movie has been on the cards for a couple of years now, with the original plan to combine live-action and animation to bring the speedster to life.

No information on the plot so far, but presumably Sonic will be looking to stop Dr Robotnik, potentially in the real world. Part of me hopes this could be a meta look at Sonic and video games, not unlike Last Action Hero. They could even get Arnie to voice Tails.

The film was originally being developed at Sony Pictures, but after development stalled Paramount moved in to pick up the rights in October last year.

The film will be directed by first-timer Jeff Fowler, who directed the Oscar-nominated 2005 short Gopher Broke. Deadpool director Tim Miller is the film’s executive producer, and also filled the same role on Gopher Broke.
