MMO RuneScape boasts over 200m registered users

Jagex’s long-running, massively popular MMO RuneScape is perhaps even more popular than we thought.

The developer has announced their free-to-play MMO now boasts over 200m registered users from more than 150 countries since its launch in 2001.

In that time users have logged some seven billion hours of playing time.

Although RuneScape has achieved so much over the past decade, smashing 200 million accounts is a huge accomplishment for the dedicated development team and is thanks to our awesome community,” stated Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard.

When the game was first released, nobody could ever have expected it would reach such high levels of popularity largely by community word of mouth. It has been an incredible journey to get to where we are today, and by continuing our tradition of constantly innovating, evolving and lovingly crafting RuneScape we are certain to continue to break records by creating an online adventure like no other.

We’ve witnessed a really strong resurgence in the game’s popularity over the past two years and are seeing strong player growth year-on-year.”

Jagex would not divulge what percentage of that incredible number make up actually active users.

Whist we’re unable to give out specific commercially sensitive data like active player numbers, being the first game to reach 200 million registered accounts is a significant milestone in RuneScape’s illustrious history, and an illustration of its continued and enduring popularity," Jagex told our sister site Develop.
