Android claimed 84.7% smartphone sales share in Q2 2014

84.7 per cent of smartphones shipped worldwide in the quarter ending June 2014 used Google’s Android operating system.

That’s up from 79.6 per cent in the same quarter a year before, IDC data claims.

iOS claimed a market share of 11.7 per cent, down from 13 per cent the year before. Between them the pair accounted for 96.4 per cent of the global smartphone market.

255.3m Android smartphones were shipped in the period, up 33.3 per cent of 2013’s 191.5. iOS shipments climbed 12.7 per cent to 35.2m.

That leaves Windows Phone with a 2.5 per cent market share (down from 3.4 per cent), with shipments falling 9.4 per cent to 7.4m units. Blackberry shipments plummeted 78 per cent to 1.5m, with market share tumbling from 2.8 per cent to 0.5 per cent.
