Big name developers on board for iOS 8 and Metal

Apple discussed the games offering of its new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices last night, as well as the new development capabilities of iOS 8.

Central to the latter is the new graphics API Metal. As has already been announced, the tech cuts down the processing cost of outputting high-end graphics, allowing developers to make mobile games look better than ever.

Unreal Engine and Unity have both already confirmed support for Metal in the popular engines, and a string of developers and publishers were named at the Apple reveal that are already working on titles to take advantage of the tech.

These include publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Disney, Ubisoft, 505 Games and Square Enix, as well as developers CD Projekt Red, NaturalMotion Games, Vector Unity, Midoki, Super Evil Megacorp and Rebellion.

Super Evil Megacorp showed off its new MOBA called Vainglory, while Rebellion has pledged to continue its mobile success with Metal-powered games.

"We’re excited to be working so closely with Apple’s technology in our Asura Engine as it will empower us to code to the metal, remove some of the main rendering bottlenecks and bring even better looking, more immersive games to iOS devices," said Rebellion co-founder and CTO Chris Kingsley.

"Metal is leading the way in the next generation of mobile rendering technologies. It could be a real turning point for mobile gaming."
