Blitz Games Studios expands into mobile

UK developer Blitz Games Studios has expanded beyond its console roots and into the mobile games market, it has announced.

As part of taking on the mobile space, Blitz formed a mini-development team called team Lumo to create action-adventure ‘rain ‘em up’ Kumo Lumo.

The game requires users to control a cloud with the ability to affect the environment, and must fulfil objectives by raining on the world below.

Whilst the UK studio has previously had experience in creating mobile games with its 2009 title Droplitz, Kumo Lumo will be the developer’s first title to release exclusively on iOS.

Mobile games outfit Chillingo is also working on the project and will publish the game.

“Blitz Games Studios has a long and proud heritage of making critically and commercially successful console games but it’s clear that the future of gaming lies in embracing a wider variety of inter-connected platforms; our move into the mobile space is part of a strategy to enable that,” said Blitz CEO Philip Oliver.

“Many large developers have been unable to find their way successfully into the mobile market but we’re confident that we’ve created an approach that capitalises on our console experience whilst bringing the agility and flexibility required to develop smaller scale titles into the mix. Not only this, we are establishing a wealth of new IP too.”

Taking just six weeks to develop between other projects, Oliver said the team adapted and utilized working practices of smaller indie development teams to create the title.

“Trying to apply a large studio’s traditional development methods and pipelines to a mobile game would have definitely been over-engineering a solution,” he said.

“The lessons we have learnt from Kumo Lumo’s design process are of enormous benefit to the whole studio and the team are already hard at work on our next mobile project.”
