Vodafone today announced the local winners of its Appstar competition, with a list of eight apps that will now compete to become the best app in Europe and claim a share of the €1 million prize fund.
Mark Salvin, an 18-year-old Computer Science student at Southampton University created a Jogger Tracker App, which is designed to track the amount of calories burned, and distance travelled during a run using GPS to calculate the information.
He heard about the competition through the Joint Innovation Lab site and decided to enter instead of the app he designed resulting in a ‘project on the side’.
As he is a keen sportsman, Mark developed Jogger Tracker because he thought it would be something he could use himself and saw it would benefit others too.
It took him around 2-3 months to complete due to his busy schedule with uni work, however he said if he would’ve been able to devote his attention to it fulltime it would have taken around 2-3 weeks.
Entries have flooded in from across Europe with tough decisions taken by the official judging panel to narrow them down to just eight local country winners in Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK.

Voters will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win one of ten Samsung H1 devices. The results of the public vote, and the overall winner of the Vodafone AppStar competition, will be announced on 24 May 2010.
