Mobile giant Supercell has canned its next title.
Smash Land was being outlined as the follow-up to the studio’s hugely successful apps Clash of Clans, Boom Beach and Hay Day, which currently rank as the top, sixth and 16th-biggest iOS titles out there.
Although the game was yet to be released, some players had managed to sneak their way into trying the title out after testers in Australia and Canada opened up the way for others to jump in and give it a go.
Supercell was even accepting money via microtransactions for the game, which have now been halted ahead of Smash Land’s final termination date of September 1st.
Announcing the app’s shutdown on its forum, Supercell said that despite its popularity and positive feedback from players, it was proving difficult to reach the high standards set by our other games”.
The reference to ‘other games’ may be a veiled recognition of the mild controversy surrounding Smash Land, which was perceived by some players to borrow several of its gameplay aspects from Japanese mobile smash hit Monster Strike.
We did not want to continue for the sake of continuing as that is not the Supercell way,” the developer added.
These decisions are never easy, but we feel it is best to learn from what didn’t work, move on and put our efforts into making better games for you.”
