Facebook teams up with HTML5 specialists Spaceport

The team behind HTML5 web gaming tech Spaceport.io is moving to Facebook to work more closely with the social networking giant.

Spaceport.io founder Ben Savage said that the developers made the decision to work more closely with Facebook after much internal discussion to help it building “best-in class mobile experiences”.

The company’s HTML5 and Flash tech is designed to allow users to release apps simultaneously across mobile and web platforms.

Although Facebook has not acquired the technology itself, the partnership with the tool’s developers is likely part of the social networking giant’s big push to increase the diversity of its game offerings and help developers looking to release their titles on both Facebook and mobile platforms.

Despite forming closer links with Facebook, Savage said the team would continue to fully support Spaceport “for some time to come”. He also stated that developers would be able to continue to build and create apps, games and content through the platform.

“Facebook is building best-in-class mobile experiences, and after much internal discussion with my co-founder and mentor and YouWeb Incubator founder Peter Relan, our team saw a huge potential in working more closely with Facebook,” said Savage.

“With that said, today we’re announcing that the Spaceport.io team will be moving to Facebook to make an even greater impact. Meanwhile the Spaceport platform will continue to be supported by Peter and his YouWeb team.

“Facebook will not be acquiring the technology itself, so developers can continue to build and create apps, games, and content unimpeded and with confidence that Spaceport will be around and fully supported for some time to come.”

Last year it was announced that BBC Worldwide had invested into the HTML5 development platform in a funding round for the company, with other backers including US games incubator YouWeb. The investment was raised to help the company hire new staff and develop the platform’s HTML5 and Flash compatible performance.
