Tablets 'are the ultimate game platform', says Supercell exec

Finnish F2P mobile dev making $500k a day on iOS

Finland-based free-to-play developer Supercell is generating more than $500,000 a day from its iOS titles, it has revealed.

Speaking to the New York Times, the tablet-focused outfit said that after Apple takes its cut, it was currently making $350,000 a day in revenue from its iOS titles Clash of Clans and Hay Day.

Combat strategy game Clash of Clans, which has also been released on iPhone, has been number one in Apple’s top grossing iPad chart in more than five dozen for a number of weeks.

On the back of the game’s success, Supercell has also expanded into the US by opening a San Francisco office, led by former VOO! CEO and iWin president Greg Harper.

The North America GM said that the studio had focused on tablet titles because it saw the device as “the ultimate game platform”.

“The technology and hardware performance really is close to on-par with that of consoles,” said Harper.

In reference to portable consoles from Sony and Nintendo, and the rumoured iPad Mini, he added: “That market seems in trouble to me. The iPad mini could be one of the final nails in the coffin.”

The mobile start-up was formed in 2010, and has raised financing from a number of investors including Venture Capital firm Accel, which pledged $12m to the studio. Accel has also previously invested in another Finnish studio, Angry Birds developer Rovio.
