Four out of five App Store apps aren’t visible – report

Apps that have no visibility at all – or zombie apps” – make up 80 per cent of Apple’s App Store library, new research from Adjust shows.

Joystiq reports on the mobile analytics firm’s findings, which defines app visibility as ranking on any of the 39,171 App Store top lists on two out of three days over the month.”

Not a huge feat to accomplish, yet most apps (according to Adjust, 953,387 apps out of 1,197,087 as of last month) are failing to do so and falling into the zombie app category. The zombie app rate hit 70.4 per cent in June 2013, and has risen to 79.6 per cent over the past year.

Adjust predicts the App Store will receive 578,000 new apps by July 1st, 2015 – adding that more than 1.6m apps have been uploaded to the App Store since its launch, and 21.8 per cent (350,000 apps) have been pulled either voluntarily or due to violation of Apple’s rules.

Games are the largest category in Apple’s App Store, and as previously reported make up 85 per cent of top grossing apps on both iOS and Android platforms. 237,389 apps were added in the past year, and 65,643 were subsequently removed. The App Store saw 453,902 new apps in 2013, with around 68,000 apps removed.
