Mind Candy boss Michael Acton Smith believes its newly announced IP World of Warriors has “tremendous potential” to be a big new franchise for the company.
Speaking to Develop, Acton Smith said that unlike Moshi Monsters, its new IP was being targeted at all ages, not just children, despite the game’s cartoony visuals.
"The World of Warriors is the start of a new universe, and the game will be at the heart of it," he said.
"This is a game that’s not just for kids – but for everyone to get involved with. Because we’re building a universe and the game will be at the centre of everything that we do, we think World of Warriors has tremendous potential for a franchise."
The game is being developed for mobile platforms by Mind Candy’s ‘innovation centre’ Candy Labs in Brighton. The idea was originally pitched by art director John Taylor at its annual offsite get together Candystock.
“Johnny’s son is a huge fan of play fighting and fascinated by the stories of history’s greatest warriors,” said Acton Smith.
“He thought it would be great to channel that enthusiasm and energy into a game on tablet and mobile. The company, myself and the rest of management loved it, and so began the development of the game."
When asked by Develop whether the title would be free-to-play – a business model currently under close scrutiny in children’s games in particular – Acton Smith avoided giving a clear answer or any details on the matter, but stated Mind Candy had yet to reveal any details about the game’s business model.
“At Mind Candy we always seek to be completely transparent about our pricing with our entire user community,” he said.
“Mobile is a fast-changing medium, as it evolves, so too will our policies, as we make the right cultural adjustments and understand what our audience wants.”
Having focused on Moshi Monsers since 2007, the World of Warriors IP was something of a surprise announcement last week. But Acton Smith teased that further new games could be on the way.
"This is an exciting year for Mind Candy and we have a number of new projects bubbling away," he said.
"We can’t wait to share them with the world once they are ready."
