Safari-optimised version of Bejeweled developed and available from today

PopCap launches first free iPhone game

PopCap has devised a version of its flagship matching game Bejeweled for Apple’s iPhone.

The game, which can be played by visiting popcap.com on the iPhone itself, runs within the iPhone’s web browser and features unspecified Web 2.0 capabilities.

“We’re excited to be providing the most popular puzzle game of the 21st century to users of the most advanced mobile device yet created,” said Andrew Stein, director of mobile platforms at PopCap.

“We wanted to give the hundreds of thousands of iPhone users a fun, fast gaming fix – and at no cost, no less.”

PopCap are the first of the iPod game developers to produce an iPhone game, and it remains to be seen if EA and Gameloft will follow suit – and whether running games through a web interface will provide a backdoor for other developers locked-out with the iPhone’s closed platform status.
