Nintendo announces Mario Kart Tour, launch date for Switch online service and Mario film

Nintendo has finally announced a launch date for the Switch online service: it will land on the console in September 2018, the firm announced on Twitter.

Nintendo Switch Online will give access to a library of classic Nintendo games each month and discounts on selected games in the eShop. It will set consumers back €3.99 for a month membership, €7.99 for three months and €19.99 for a year (UK pricing has yet to be confirmed). Initially set to launch in autumn 2017, it was then pushed back to ‘early 2018’. Online play and the Nintendo Switch app will remain free until the paid service launches in September. Check the official page for the full details.

The platform holder also announced on Twitter that Mario Kart is soon to land on mobile, with a new title called Mario Kart Tour currently in the works. No more details were unveiled, only that it will launch “in the fiscal year ending in March 2019.”

Last but not least, Nintendo revealed that a Mario animated film was also in the works (see original Tweet below), co-produced by Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me, Minions) and Shigeru Miyamoto. We are honestly relieved that Nintendo is not attempting to release a live action Mario film again. The release date has not been revealed but the official announcement said the film will be co-financed and distributed by Universal Pictures.
