NPD acquires digital analyst firm

North American sales tracker and analyst firm NPD has confirmed the acquisition of mobile internet and digital entertainment analyst In-Stat.

In-Stat will keep its name but now directly report to NPD’s Tim Bush.

The move is simply the latest in a long line of buyouts that looks to position NPD better for the emerging digital age that is transforming the shape of the market. Other companies now falling under the NPD banner include DisplayResearch, Solarbuzz and Connected Intelligence.

With the acquisition of In-Stat, NPD is offering unique information on the intersection of hardware, content, and distribution,” Bush stated.

In-Stat’s world-class team of analysts brings deep industry knowledge that will enable us to help our clients understand and identify business opportunities.”

It’s not hard to identify the context in which this acquisition was made.

Last month EA publicly questioned the relevance of NPD’s retail-based video games sales numbers. In response, NPD pledged to up its efforts to incorporate digital data into its monthly findings.
