There’s no denying that Sony’s first party software line-up for PS3 in 2011 is extremely impressive, but despite this analyst Michael Pachter believes the console will struggle to close the gap on Xbox 360 in 2011 in the US.
"It’s really hard to argue that console sales are tied to releaseschedules, now that we’re in the sixth year of the console cycle," he told IndustryGamers. "Idoubt that many hard core gamers have held off purchasing a PS3 whilethey waited for Killzone 3 to come out.
"At this point in the cycle, theonly people who have waited are those who planned to buy a console at aprice point under $200, and while I think that there are a lot of thosepeople, pricing remains stubbornly high.
"Microsoft gained an advantagewith Kinect, and a 4GB Kinect bundle costs the same as the entry levelPS3, allowing Microsoft to maintain its sales advantage."
This would all change, however, should Sony decide to cut the price of the PS3.
"Sony can retake the advantage if it can afford to lowerprice and attract the cost-conscious consumer," Pachter added. "But I think that theywill wait to see what Microsoft does first, then merely match them onpricing, so I expect Microsoft to remain ahead in 2011."
