Digital Rise of the Tomb Raider sales three times that of Xbox One

It appears that the PC release of Rise of the Tomb Raider had a strong debut.

SuperData’s January digital games market report claims that Lara Croft’s latest adventure sold three times as many copies on PC as it did digitally on Xbox One in its first month.

This obviously precludes physical sales so there’s no way to know how both releases compared overall, but certainly in the UK physical sales for the game on Xbox were lower than expected.

The firm also points out that on console Tomb Raider went up against the highly successful Fallout 4, which likely further hampered its efforts.

Global digital game sales for the period were pegged at $6.3bn in January 2016, up eight per cent year-on-year. Digital sales on both console and PC were the fastest growing, jumping 30 per cent and 33 per cent respectively year-on-year.

StarCraft II was the most lucrative paid game on PC throughout the period, followed by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto V. In the digital console sector Call of Duty: Black Ops III generated the most revenue, followed by FIFA 16, GTA V, Destiny and Fallout 4.
