League of Legends has over 100 million monthly players

League of Legends has more than 100 million players each month according to studio co-founders Marc Tryndamere” Merrill and Brandon Ryze” Beck.

The announcement was made in an interview with Polygon, where Merrill and Beck were reflecting on the studio’s growth and how League has surpassed anything they could have imagined in terms of success.

The 100 million figure is the first time that Riot has publicly mentioned player numbers in quite some time. The last time we got an update on it, LoL was sat at 67 million monthly players, and that was a couple of years back.

To put the number into perspective Dota 2, easily the second most popular MOBA, currently sits around 13 million monthly players. When you consider that the Dota 2 International had a crowd funded prize pool of $20 million this year, you can imagine how much money Riot will be bringing in from League.

Elsewhere in the interview the two studio heads confirm that Riot is working on new games, some of which may not be tied into League in any way, and that they are still working on implementing replays into LoL.
