UPDATED: BioWare reveals new F2P Ultima Online MMO

A brand new version of Ultima Online is on the way.

EA-owned BioWare has revealed Ultima Forever, which it describes as the first great Western RPG” that has apparently been lovingly restored”.

The game will be free to play and, most likely, supported by microtransactions.

Whether that means it’s a remake of 1997 PC original or a brand new project isn’t entirely clear.

Return to the Ultima series in BioWare’s new cross-platform action RPG,” the official blurb reads. Accept the challenge from Lady British and save the land of Britannia. Play as the Fighter or the Mage and travel alone or with friends, restore virtue and become the Avatar.”

UPDATE: GameSpot says that Ultima Forever is a remake of 1985 title Ultima IV. It is due for launch on iPad and PC later this year. Cross-platform online multiplayer is also promised.
