We took the short trip to Pune on Friday for the first ever Ubiday Pune, where the Ubisoft welcomed journalists and other game developers from around India to get a glimpse of what goes on at its Pune studio.
Syed Abbas spoke about the challenges of brining the older Splinter Cell games to the PS3 in the Splinter Cell Trilogy, while Jithin Rao spoke about the studio’s work on the DS and 3DS.
Abbas mentioned that while the common perception is that Ubisoft Pune focusses primarily on mobile games, a chunk of the work being done at the studio is on consoles, and on digitally distributed games in particular.
After a quick lunch, it was time for a presentation of game design from Jitesh Panchal and Haiderali Choonawala, which revolved around the concept of ‘form follows function’.
That concept was then put into practice as the duo put us through a design workshop involving strands of spaghetti, clay and a marshamallow.
Finally, Prashanth Kannan walked us through the QA practices at Ubisoft Pune, including the hiring process for testers, career progression, and the close working relationships maintained between developers and testers.
After the presentations, it was on to the preview booths, where we had a chance to try out some of Ubisoft’s upcoming games, including Assassin’s Creed 3, Far Cry 3 and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.
All in all, it was a fun day at Ubisoft Pune and a wonderful insight into the operations of one of India’s largest and busiest game development studios.
