PS2 to narrowly miss becoming India’s first million-selling console

The PlayStation 2 is India’s highest selling console by far, but with Sony having discontinued production earlier this year, it appears the console will narrowly miss hitting the landmark one million sales figure in the country.

I would have loved it (if we could hit a million), but I think we will just miss it like Don Bradman with his 99.99,” PlayStation India head Atindriya Bose told MCV.

We’re in the last phase now. We have a few more units to sell and the rest is what’s already in the market,” Bose said, adding, We could still achieve that number though, because if there is demand, there could be grey imports, but officially, most probably no.”

Bose said that the current installed base of all PlayStation consoles in the country (not including imports) stood at 1.8 million, with the PS2 making up half that number. The PS3 and PSP installed bases currently stand at 230,000 to 250,000 and 460,000 respectively.

The challenge now is to achieve in two years what has so far taken us five years. That is the challenge we should take up with the PS Vita, PS3 and PS4”.
