Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate will have playable female lead, report claims

Ubisoft will make good on its promise to deliver gender diversity in its upcoming titles by allowing players of the next Assassin’s Creed to assume the role of a women.

That’s according to Kotaku, which says that Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate – which is supposedly the new name for the game previously unveiled as Victory – will offer two main characters. One is the previously detailed Jacob while the other is his sister Evie.

It is claimed that Jacob will feature in approximately 75 per cent of the campaign missions, although gamers will be free to swap between the pair when roaming around Victorian London. Incidentally, it is also said that the game will not this time feature any online multiplayer.

If this report is true, Syndicate will actually be the second AC game to feature a female lead following on from 2012’s Vita title Assassin’s Creed: Liberation.

Ubisoft last year came in for criticism owing to the lack of playable female characters in either Assassin’s Creed: Unity or Far Cry 4. The situation was not helped by the contrasting reasons given – was it a workload issue or an artistic decision?

As a result CEO Yves Guillemot said that the company was working” on improving the diversity of its characters, adding: "We want to spend more time on the worlds and characters in our games. You will see more and more of this at Ubisoft. We’ll try to be less like we have been in the past with some characters. We’ll try to extend more diversity."

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate/Victory will be revealed in full tonight at 5pm.
