25 per cent of US studio staff gone; Austin team shuttered; but 'cost-reduction' method leaves firm strong says CEO

Axe falls on Midway development teams

Midway is to lay off around 180 developers from its US studios as part of new cost cutting measures.

The new cost-cutting initiatives also include the closure of the publisher’s Midway Austin team and the cancellation of various unannounced projects.

Midway’s workforce will be reduced via both the closure of the Austin, Texas studio and redundancies at its San Diego studio.

“The cost-reduction measures are vital for us to rationalise our operations and provide the resources necessary for our core properties to succeed,” said Matt Booty, president and CEO of Midway in a statement announcing the new moves.

“These initiatives, along with the other steps we have taken this year, are a response to the specific challenges we are facing at Midway, many of which have been amplified by the current economic conditions.”
