Develop 100: The Top ten studios in Continental Europe

Last time we looked at the curious case of Modern Warfare 3, and how EA Canada managed to pip Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games to top spot despite the blockbuster franchise’s barmstorming success in UK retail.

Over the coming weeks, Develop will be publishing extracts and highlight data from the book, which uses GfK Chart-Track research on retail sales to formulate a ranking based on UK revenues.

The Develop 100 is an iPad-exclusive book, available for just £4.99 via the Develop iPad app. Click here to download it.

Today we look at the top ten studios based in Continental Europe and how they managed to beat tough competition and break into the Develop 100.

Whilst not quite matching the success of the world’s development hub giants such as the US and Canada, studio’s from the region still managed to bring in a combined £150.83m in UK retail revenue for 2011.

That said however, EA Canada managed to come close on its own with an incredible £113.27m, mostly thanks to its hugely popular FIFA series.

The top developer in continental Europe is perhaps unsurprisingly another EA studio, Battlefield 3 outfit DICE, with chalked up £50.69m to make it to number five in the Develop 100.

This was followed closely by Ubisoft France in 7th place, garnering £46.38m in UK revenue driven by sales of Just Dance 2 and 3, with Rayman Origins flagging behind despite critical success.

No other studios were listed in the top 20, with Techland, Crytek and Guerrilla Games rounding off the top 50.

Eden Studios, People Can Fly, City Interactive, 2K Czech and little known Germany developer Cerasus.Media meanwhile made up the rest of the top ten studios from Contintental Europe.

Avalanche Studios just missed out on making the top ten, sitting in 99th with £2.04m based on revenues from its March 2010 release Just Cause 2 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
