Bag checks and ban on imitation weapons introduced as exhibitors and attendees advised to leave unnecessary items at home

Gamescom and GDC Europe tighten security following Germany attacks

Devs and other members of the games industry heading to Cologne in Germany later this month for trade events GDC Europe and Gamescom will be subject to a number of new security checks.

The changes have been introduced in the wake of “the terrible incidents of the past weeks”, organisers behind the events said, referring to four recent attacks that took place in Munich, Würzburg and Ansbach, leaving ten dead and many more injured.

Unsurprisingly, cosplay enthusiasts have been told they will not be allowed to bring imitation weapons to the events, with those dressing up urged to avoid carrying items that could cause confusion across the entire city "in consideration for the inhabitants and visitors of Cologne".

A wider change is the confirmation that bags will be searched, with the hosts advising attendees to leave all unnecessary items at home or their hotel in order to minimise waiting times. To account for longer entrance times, Gamescom safety controls will begin at 7am – with queues expected.

“The controls will take on variable forms, which will depend on the respective short-term consultations with the safety authorities,” an announcement email explained.

“Please expect longer queuing times and support us in carrying out the control measures by bringing no or as little luggage as possible with you to the fair.”

Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse, the location where Gamescom is held, said: "In the present days, the need for safety is a major issue for all parties involved.

"It is our aim to meet this requirement by adapting the safety measures and at the same time limiting Gamescom in all its facets as little as possible. We hope for the understanding and support of all participants.”
