Gearbox Software has emerged as the mystery party that outbid the rest for the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise at THQ’s auction.
The winning $1.35m bid by the Borderlands developer won’t become official until next month if and when it receives court approval.
"Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ," a statement from the company read.
"Brian Martel, Gearbox Software’s Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic’s brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition. Brian intends as first priority to direct Gearbox’s interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today’s leading digital platforms."
Gearbox representatives also encouraged interested parties to contribute to the future of the Homeworld series by going to their forums to share their ideas.
"Please try to get our attention if you have capability and interest to join the effort in developing or enabling Homeworld’s future.”
Publisher Aspyr is the back-up bidder on the IP, with a bid of $1.3m.
