DICE 2013 will be headlined by two heavyweights from the games and film industry this year in the form of Valve president Gabe Newell and filmmaker JJ Abrams.
The industry veterans will meet in Las Vegas for a session titled, Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?
The annual DICE Summit, produced by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, brings together the best and brightest minds from the interactive entertainment industry.
“From TV to film and now award-winning mobile apps, there’s no question that JJ has his finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry, and we’re thrilled to welcome him and our 2013 Hall of Fame inductee, Gabe Newell, to the DICE stage,” said AIAS president Martin Rae.
“JJ thoughtfully weaves together suspense, action, emotion and fun into every one of his projects – elements every game developer aspires to capture as well. Each year, the DICE Summit sets the tone for the year ahead in games, and adding JJ and Gabe’s shared insights is a natural fit as we see all forms of entertainment converge.”
Abrams is famous for directing feature films including Star Trek (2009) and Super 8, as well as television series including Felicity, Lost and Fringe. His most recent feature, Star Trek into Darkness, is due this May. Abrams his also been selected to direct Star Wars: Episode VII.
As well as his clear status as a film and television dignitary, the Academy’s reason for selecting Abrams likely lies with one of his latest ventures, Bad Robot Interactive, which co-created Super 8 and created Action Movie FX – two award-winning apps. Apple recently named Action Movie FX as the iPhone App of the Year.
Abrams and Newell’s opening keynote at the 2013 DICE Summit will take place on February 6th, 2013.
Valve president and co-founder Gabe Newell will also give the Thursday conference keynote, entitled ‘A View on Next Steps’. The Thursday keynote will focus on where the industry is heading and the advances Valve is making with Steam and Big Picture to prepare for that future.
Newell is also due to be induced into the 2013 AIAS Hall of Fame at the 16th annual DICE Awards on February 7th, 2013.
