E3'09: LucasArts working on a remastered original, Telltale to take the series forward with five new episodes

LucasArts and Telltale set to resurrect Monkey Island

LucasArts and Telltale Games have announced further details of their plans to revitalise the seminal Monkey Island series.

A brand new series of Monkey Island, developed by Californian group Telltale games, will arrive on PC and WiiWare in five separate episodes.

Telltale is no stranger to the episodic model. The developer had recently celebrated over 1 million sales in its five year history with episodes of Sam & Max as well as Wallace & Gromit.

Tales of Monkey Island, its newest venture, will arrive from July 7.

With Telltale working on new ventures, it will be LucasArts that turns to the series’ roots. The company is currently developing a re-imagined edition of the original which landed nearly two decades ago.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, set for release on XBLA and PC, will feature “updated high definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score, and full voiceover to the classic adventure game.”

“We couldn’t be any more excited about bringing Monkey Island to today’s gamers," said LucasArts’ President Darrell Rodriguez.

Telltale CEO Dan Connors added that "the Monkey Island series set the standard for storytelling and character development in games. The next several months should be filled with all kinds of surprises as we continue the dramatic stories of Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck."

"We are happy to be working with LucasArts to make this happen," he added.
