MLB 14 servers to be taken offline in June – a year after launch

Sony has said that the UK servers for baseball title MLB 14 will go offline in June.

The PlayStation Blog revealed that the servers for the PS4, PS3 and Vita versions of the game will all be taken offline on June 18th.

That’s a little over a year on from the game’s PS4 launch on May 6th and 15 months on from the PS3 and Vita release. It is certainly not a coincidence that the next iteration in the series is due out at the end of the month.

Many have reacted in surprise that a game consumers would have paid full price for as recently as one year ago will now lose all online functionality. And it’s not the first, either – earlier this month 2K said that it would be flicking the switch on NBA 2K14’s online modes any time now, just 16 months after its release. 2K13 and 2K12 were similarly affected.

On the other hand, there’s no indication yet that MLB 14 is suffering the same fate in the baseball-hungry American market – and it’s probably not unrealistic to suspect the game has a very small user base in the UK.
