Modern Warfare 3 coming to Wii

Pre-orders for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are on track to surpass those of last year’s Black Ops – and could soar higher with the newly announced Wii SKU.

During an investors earnings call that followed Activision Blizzard’s better-than-expected Q2 results, the publisher confirmed that a Wii version of Modern Warfare 3 will be released this year, according to CVG.

No details were given on which studio is developing the Wii edition or whether or not it would be compatible with the new social online service Call of Duty Elite, which launches with the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC SKUs on November 8th.

Modern Warfare 3 will be the first Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty to launch on Wii alongside other console versions. While Treyarch’s Black Ops and World At War were released across all platforms, the original Modern Warfare was released on Wii two years after it first launched.

The announcement comes as Activision reveals that pre-orders for Modern Warfare 3 are already outstripping those seen by the series’ most successful game, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

In the company’s financial report, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said: "To date, pre-orders for Modern Warfare 3 have significantly exceeded the pre-orders for Black Ops at this time last year."

Later in an interview, he added: "It’s sort of surprising because you always go into the launch of a new Call of Duty game with an expectation that… it’s a hard number to beat, but if you look at the player enthusiasm for Modern Warfare 3, I don’t know if we’ve really seen anything like it in our 21-year history."
