Nintendo drops out of best Global Brands 100 list

Apple has again topped Interbrand’s Best Global Brands list, although gaming icon Nintendo has failed to feature for first time ever.

The Wii U and 3DS platform holder just scraped into the 2014 listings in 100th place having featured 67th and 56th in the two previous years. Interbrand Japan CEO Yuki Wada told Japan Times that Nintendo was snubbed because the Kyoto-based game-maker is not keeping up with changes in people’s lives”.

The company will surely hope that next year’s reveal of its new NX console and the upcoming arrival of its first mobile titles helps to reverse the tide.

Apple was the top brand for the third year running, having toppled Coca-Cola in 2013. Other notable entries include Microsoft (4th), Amazon (10th), Disney (13th), eBay (32nd), Sony (58th), LEGO (which at 82nd was the highest place new entry) and PayPal (97th).

Interbrand’s list, which can be seen here, ranks companies according to their brands’ financial performance, customer influence and ability to command a premium price.
