NPD: Music genre down 46%

Though the signs are that the world is slowly pulling out of recession, punters are seemingly still proving reluctant to shell out the high cost demanded of modern rhythm action games – leading to ongoing year-on-year sales slumps for the genre.

With the introduction of Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 in September, a lot of folks have inquired about the performance of these titles and the music/dance genre,” NPD’s Anita Frazier said in the sales tracker’s August report for North America.

While sales of this genre are down 46 per cent year-to-date, unit sales are down much less because lower prices are playing into the dollar sales decline.

"It’s still the third best-selling genre for the year after general action and multiple/other sports – where Wii Fit resides.”
